Softrams Volunteers with Miriam's Kitchen
Softrams is always looking for new ways to get involved with our community. From providing education opportunities to local students to sponsoring youth sports teams, our goal is to bring positive change to all people across our nation.
This year, our Women’s Employee Resource Group (ERG) reached out to Miriam’s Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides food, services, and support to homeless individuals in DC. Originally founded in 1983, Miriam's Kitchen provides direct services to combat chronic homelessness in DC. Each year, Miriam's Kitchen serves more than 75,000 meals and provides social services like clothing, toiletries, and obtaining identification documents to around 2,500 people experiencing homelessness. The organization also provides housing support services to more than 200 formerly homeless individuals.
One of the critical programs at Miriam's Kitchen is street outreach, which seeks to build relationships and connect people to services. The street outreach program covers 33 square miles in DC – nearly half of the city. Street outreach includes distributing care packages containing basic necessities and other items, including socks, sunscreen, and food.
Softrams volunteers came together at our Baltimore office in May to learn about Miriam’s Kitchen and to help assemble care packages for the organization's street outreach program. The in-person volunteers were also joined by volunteers dialing in virtually. Volunteers quickly assembled the packages while getting to know one another, many meeting for the first time in person.
We are very proud to have helped Miriam’s Kitchen in their critical mission of fighting chronic homelessness in DC, and to have made a connection with this organization with the help of our Women’s ERG.
